Written tests can be taken Monday through Friday. For same day issuance, tests must be completed by 3:45 p.m. CDL, driving, and motorcycle skills tests are given on Wednesdays by appointment.

Persons under the age of 18 applying for a first-time instruction permit must submit parental consent on form 430018, confirmation of birth (certified birth certificate or a passport), a secondary form of ID (for a list of secondary IDs, check with the treasurer's office) and proof of social security.  A social security card serves as both secondary ID and proof of social security.

Persons testing for a first time commercial driver's license or adding hazardous materials endorsement must present their actual social security card in addition to their driver's license.

License Renewal
Your license expires on your birthday.  It is valid for another 60 days, and can be renewed within that 60 days without having to take the knowledge test.

New residents
You are considered an Iowa resident for the purposes of driver licensing and vehicle registration when you have done at least one of the following
· Registered to vote
· Enrolled your children in public school
· Accepted a permanent job
· Resided in Iowa for 30 continuous days

Voter Registration
You may apply to register to vote or update your voter registration at your local driver license station.

Name changes
Applicants must provide proof for any name change.  Photocopies and faxes of documents will NOT be accepted.
Acceptable items are:
· Court-ordered name change containing full name, date of birth and court seal
· Divorce decree stipulating name change
· Original or certified copy of a marriage license or certificate

Person with a disability parking permit
You must do the following:
· Complete a new application for a parking permit or license plate
· Provide a statement from your physician or chiropractor which states you are a person with a disability, and whether your disability is permanent or temporary
Applications are available from any Drivers License Station, the Iowa Department of Transportation, your County Treasurer's Office or the Commission on Persons with Disabilities, a Division of the Department of Human Rights.

Completed applications may be taken to any Drivers License Station or mailed to the Iowa Department of Transporation, Office of Vehicle Services, Customer Service Section, Park Fair Mall, 100 Euclid Ave, Des Moines, IA 50306-9278
